Why You Should Be Friends With a Nerd

You should be friends with a nerd. A nerd will not really know how to be with you all the time, but will always try her best. She will treasure all the moments that the two of you spent together, because she doesn't really have any friends to call her own. She is really afraid to lose you, and will never forgive herself if she did any wrong to you. Sometimes, it may take her years to get over what she has done. She will try to remember what you sounded like, what you looked like.

When you need your nerd, she'll be there. She'll never leave you when all of your other friends leave you. She'll walk you home in the middle of the night because she's scared something will happen to you if you go yourself. Sometimes, when she does something stupid, you laugh, but then she is pretty happy because she has made a friend laugh. She treats everybody as a friend, but she is pretty scarred from past relationships. She wants to say that you mean almost the world for her because you are her friend, but every time she wants to say it, you are with your friends.

Then you two are hanging out for the first time. She is really quiet, not because she doesn't have anything to say, but because she wants you to do most of the talking. She loves the way words come out of your mouth. Although she wants to say how good you look in your outfit, she doesn't want to say it out loud because she's afraid it will come out wrong. Whenever she looks in your eyes, she marvels at the different colors it turns as the light hits it at different angles. Everything you do seems right, you seems like the perfect person to her. She likes her friends all the same, only that there aren't that many.

Then, your birthday comes around. She forgot that the day was your birthday, and forgot to bring you a present because she was studying for a test earlier, and totally forgot. Although she brought you a present later, she was afraid that you would always hate her for forgetting your birthday. She made a promise to herself to never forget again. You never really remembered, and never held a grudge over this thing.

Then there was your first fight together. You were screaming your head at her, screaming how much you hated her. You never mentioned how when you were surrounded by strangers wanting to take your money, and how she helped you out. She never reminded you how scared she was, how she decided not to turn around and run when you were surrounded by thugs. How her mouth tasted when she was slapped across the face, how her body felt after it was beat up by 5 guys that were all twice her size because she did not know how to fight back. How she had to lie to her mom about where the bruises and cuts came from. You seem to have forgotten all that.

Then you tell her in this cold voice how your friendship is all over. How you feel as if it is right for the two of you to not see each other again, and it's all for the best.

The nerd lies on her bed and stares at the ceiling. She just lies there for hours on end, trying to make sense of what happened to her. And she tries to imagine life before she met you, and realizes that it's going to take a long time.

  8. so sad that this goes on every single day.

i am proud of the fact that i flitted among every clique in high school - nerds to jocks. there is value in everyone, and no one is worth less than me. :)

    thank you for stopping by!

  9. This post made me incredibly sad. I hope the pain reflected in it is not yours.

  10. What a wonderful piece. So sad and rings so true. Is this the outline for a character of yours?

  11. It's always sad when a friendship ends and you don't really know why. Years ago, a friend gave me a card that read, "We'll be friends until we're old and senile" and when you open the card it says, "Then we'll be new friends!" I treasured the card so much I put it up on the wall by my computer. Now she hardly speaks to me and acts like I'm forcing myself on her. Sigh...

  13. This made me cry. Her vulnerability is so touching and so sad. I wish I could give her a big hug and remind her that she's too important not to have friends. And those friends would be lucky to know her.

  16. Such a sad piece.

I never think of anyone as a nerd anymore. People who work hard and think hard and study hard just impress me. Maybe I inspire to be people like them.

  17. Great piece. As a life-long nerd, I agree with a lot of what it expresses.

Thanks so much for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. It's my pleasure to return the favor. Nice to meetcha.

  18. Gina,
Nerds are rather neat people. They are usually smart and don't give 2 hoots about the trendy things. I like nerds.
Thanks for stopping at my blog.

  19. Though she might consider herself a nerd now, that will probably change when she gets older. She is likely to become a successful adult whom people respect and admire. The important thing is that she remains kind, caring, and a nerd at heart. Very nicely written. Julie

  20. Thanks so much for the visit and for the comment.

The typical description of a nerd, is to my mind uncomplimentary, but they are the sort of people I like as I know they can be trusted which is the most important thing in a friendship. When a person drops a friend, you then know he or she was never a true friend anyway and in fact they have done you a favour. I have two friends only in life (other than my husband), who I would trust my life with. One I have known for close on 60 years, and the other for 30.

    Keep well Diane

  23. My human was stereotyped as a nerd in high school. Yet, he's now a great looking guy and loved by all. Yet, his inner nerd, remains and I wouldn't have him any other way.

  24. aw! that is tragic! i love nerds! even if you dint want to be friends with one (and i dont see why not, they're awesome & smart & funny on another level!) always be nice!

    great writing!

  25. Nerds rule! Maybe in High School they are harassed, but later nerds inherit the Earth. Seriously. Also, secretly, most people have an inner nerd :)

  26. Since I am what you could a nerd, is it biased that I love this post? :-)

  27. this was really sad. I was this person in middle school/some of high-school. Definitely scarred me for a long time. It does end though. All nerds grow up and learn to be happy with the people who accept them for exactly who they are. :)

  30. Gina, it is good to meet you and thanks for dropping by my blog today.
This is an interesting read. I am wondering if nerds and introverts would be similar in a lot of ways. I don't like labels and I think they can be very destructive. Acceptance is the way to go.....embracing our differences and moving ahead at our own speed.

  36. I'm pretty sure I would have been labeled one of the more 'stupider' of the nerds back in my younger years. I can relate to a lot of this, not all. But the one thing I've learned through life that has served me well is that If you love yourself you will not only attract kind, goodhearted people, but you will also always have a BFF looking directly into your eyes and listening to not only your words but your heart as well (as you look into the mirror). Easy when you're older to come to this conclusion... not so easy when you are younger :-) I can remember feeling these same feelings when I was younger.. and doing some of these same things.
You are a beautiful writer! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I am now following yours... Hope you're having a good weekend!
